Alexandra Eala of the Philippines has reached a new career milestone by climbing to a career-high ranking of No. 17 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) standings.
The 21-year-old surged past two spots following her quarterfinal run at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she accumulated 2,289 ranking points—just 26 behind Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion currently ranked No. 16.
Eala’s ascent comes after a period of inconsistency, as she had struggled to maintain her form since the US Open before regaining momentum in Japan. Her Tokyo campaign included a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Mika Stojsavljevic in the first round and a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Talia Gibson of Australia to reach the quarterfinals.
Though she fell in the last eight to Diana Shnaider in a three-set battle, her performance demonstrated improved consistency and resilience, signaling a potential resurgence as the season nears its end.
