After China Open loss, Elena Rybakina is subject of unnecessary internet criticism

Following her recent rise to the top of the rankings, Elena Rybakina experienced a surprising defeat during her opening match at the tournament in Beijing. Falling in the round of sixty-four to Alina Charaeva, she became the first top-ranked woman to lose her debut match since Naomi Osaka in 2019.

In the aftermath of this result, social media users and former competitor Rennae Stubbs directed heavy criticism toward the newly crowned world number one. Despite this online backlash and an uninspired performance, analysts note that the setback does little to threaten her standing, as she has already secured a spot in the upcoming year-end tournament where she defends her title.
