New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has transitioned to a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket, allowing him to participate in the Big Bash League in Australia later this year while still featuring in the upcoming T20 series against India. The five-match T20I series, starting later this month, will see Bracewell take on India’s Shreyas Iyer-led team, marking his continued commitment to the Blackcaps despite his franchise commitments.
His move reflects a shift in New Zealand Cricket’s approach, as five other players—Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert—have also received casual contracts for the 2026-27 season, balancing international and domestic priorities.
Nick Kelly, a standout performer in domestic cricket, has been awarded a central contract in Bracewell’s place. The 33-year-old, who has played 15 white-ball games since his debut last year, has impressed with his batting and fielding, including strong performances against Bangladesh and the West Indies.
New Zealand coach Rob Walter praised Kelly’s experience and adaptability, noting his 300-plus professional matches and his ability to thrive under pressure. Kelly’s inclusion also signals a strategic focus on developing late-blooming talent for international cricket.
