October 2026 marked a historic wave of retirements in professional tennis, as eight notable players announced their exits from the sport. Among them was Stan Wawrinka, the Swiss three-time Grand Slam champion who closed his career with a first-round loss at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
Wawrinka, a 16-time ATP title winner and Olympic gold medalist with Roger Federer, received a standing ovation from a packed home crowd before retiring at age 41. Kei Nishikori, the Japanese star and former US Open finalist, also called time on his career after a first-round defeat to Frances Tiafoe at the Japan Open.
Nishikori’s legacy includes 12 ATP titles and an Olympic bronze medal from Rio 2016, where he famously defeated Rafael Nadal. Gael Monfils, the French veteran, surprised many by retiring early amid personal struggles, including the end of his marriage to WTA player Elina Svitolina.
His decision came after withdrawing from mandatory anti-doping protocols and formally submitting his retirement to the ITIA. Meanwhile, Ana Bogdan, David Goffin, and Gastão Elias each chose to retire on home soil, with Goffin becoming Belgium’s first Top 10 male player.
Elias delivered an emotional farewell speech after his final match in Lisbon, while Goffin’s career ended at the ATP 250 in Brussels. Mikhail Kukushkin, a standout Kazakhstani player, also concluded his career in Almaty, adding to the month’s emotional farewell moments.
