Fresh off a dominant opening victory in their postseason series, the Atlanta Dream celebrated some major individual accolades for their stars. Forward Angel Reese learned prior to tipoff that she earned the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year honor, capping off a stellar campaign.
Rhyne Howard fueled the team on the court with a game-leading twenty-six points, helping secure the ninety-two to seventy-seven triumph over the Washington Mystics alongside Reese and Allisha Gray.
Reese delivered a thirteen-point, twelve-rebound double-double during her playoff debut despite struggling through a four-of-fifteen shooting night. Head coach Karl Smesko revealed the defensive award to the group during a pregame practice session, prompting cheers from teammates who also saw Reese and Howard named to the All-WNBA Second Team.
The squad now turns its focus to Game 2, where they will look to clinch the series against the Mystics on the road.
