New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy playfully described Indian star Virat Kohli as irritating after the veteran batsman sealed a five-wicket victory in the opening match of the series. Kohli crafted a brilliant 74-run knock from only 51 deliveries, featuring fourteen boundary hits, to successfully chase down a weather-shortened target of 143 in 22.4 overs.
Duffy admitted that the Kiwi bowling unit struggled against Kohli's masterful use of pitch pace and dimensions, while also conceding that their own first-innings total of 180 was entirely insufficient. During the course of the match, Kohli reached significant career milestones by eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar's total for one-day international runs during run chases, becoming the premier batter to reach 13,000 runs at the third batting position, and matching Ricky Ponting's run tally against New Zealand.
