'Bullied' and 'out of control' - Chelsea's defensive issues laid bare

Chelsea fell to a decisive 3-0 defeat away to Brentford, marking the club's 11th loss of the calendar year and surpassing their total from 2025 with three months still remaining. The result extends an alarming run under manager Xabi Alonso, whose team has now shipped at least two goals across five consecutive top-flight matches.

Vulnerability from dead-ball situations proved decisive once again when Jaidon Anthony nodded the hosts ahead from an early second-half corner aimed beyond goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, mirroring problems from their prior clash against Hull.

The strike represented Chelsea's fourth dead-ball concession across five league fixtures, lifting their overall tally to a league-worst shared mark of 23 since the previous campaign started. Vitaly Janelt revealed Brentford intentionally exploited space at the back post following a half-time adjustment, bypassing the tactical preparations of dead-ball specialist Austin MacPhee and former Brentford employee Bernardo Cueva.

Following the contest, defender Levi Colwill acknowledged his side had been physically overwhelmed during spells of play, while Alonso lamented a second-half decline in resolve and consistency.
