Celebrating the birth anniversary of Whitey Witt, this retrospective looks back at the speedy outfielder who manned center field and batted leadoff for the New York Yankees during the early 1920s. After beginning his major league career with the Philadelphia Athletics under manager Connie Mack, Witt joined New York and quickly became known for his elite plate discipline, leading the American League in walks and on-base percentage during the 1922 campaign.
Remarkably, he also batted .345 against legendary pitcher Walter Johnson over his career, drawing more walks than strikeouts against the Hall of Famer. Later that same 1922 season, Witt survived a terrifying incident in St.
Louis where a fan struck him in the head with a glass bottle, yet he managed to return just days later to drive in the runs that sealed a pennant victory for the Bronx Bombers.
