“Football Is Not the Most Important Game”: Ancelotti’s India Remark Before Brazil Clash

KOLKATA, October 2, 2026 — Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged the unique place cricket holds in India while saying that football remains deeply loved by Indian fans ahead of Saturday’s historic clash between Brazil and India at Salt Lake Stadium.

Speaking at the pre-match media interaction in Kolkata on Friday, Ancelotti said cricket is an important part of Indian culture but football does not occupy the same position.

“Cricket is part of their culture; football is not the most important game. But that doesn’t mean they don’t love football,” Ancelotti said.

The Italian manager, however, struck a positive tone about Brazil’s visit, saying his team were happy to be in India and looking forward to showcasing their quality to the supporters.

“We are happy to be here and show our quality to all who have the possibility to watch the game,” he said, describing the occasion as a potentially fantastic night.

Ancelotti also praised the reception Brazil have received in Kolkata. The five-time world champions arrived in the city ahead of their first-ever senior men's international against India, with thousands of supporters turning out to welcome the Brazilian team.

The match represents a landmark occasion for Indian football, with Brazil ranked among the world's top teams and featuring stars such as Vinícius Júnior, while India prepare for one of the biggest fixtures in their international history.

Ancelotti has also identified Indian forward Ryan Williams as a potential threat after studying India's recent performances, including their 1–1 draw against Panama.

Brazil and India will meet at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday, October 3, in a highly anticipated international friendly.
