Florida State made a dramatic coaching change on Sunday, dismissing head coach Mike Norvell just one day after a loss to Clemson. Despite a $50 million buyout clause that would have financially protected the school, Norvell’s tenure in Tallahassee ended after nearly seven seasons, marked by inconsistent results.
The Seminoles, now 3-5 overall and 1-4 in ACC play, are tied for last in the conference—a far cry from their undefeated 2023 regular season, which was capped by a controversial exclusion from the College Football Playoff. Norvell’s record of 41-39 at Florida State masks a steep decline since 2023, with the team posting just 10-22 in the two seasons following star wide receiver Jordan Travis’s graduation.
Even with the financial stakes, the program’s stagnation and lack of progress in a competitive ACC landscape made Norvell’s future untenable, despite his earlier promise of turning things around.
