Westley ends seven-season spell as Essex captain

Tom Westley has stepped down from his leadership duties at Essex following a tenure lasting seven seasons. The veteran batter explained that his primary focus must return to accumulating runs and helping the squad secure victories after a difficult campaign.

Essex finished the recent County Championship sitting eighth in the top flight. Their survival currently depends on the outcome of a separate disciplinary appeal by Leicestershire regarding a points penalty, though a final stalemate against Glamorgan allowed Essex to finish twenty-five points clear of their rivals.
