The Washington Nationals made significant roster adjustments to trim their 40-man roster ahead of the offseason, clearing waivers for several players and sending them to Triple-A or outright free agency. Among the notable moves, infielder José Tena—who hit seven home runs and posted a .672 OPS in 257 at-bats this season—was designated for assignment.
Despite his offensive potential, including a career-high exit velocity average of 90.6 mph, Tena’s defensive limitations, particularly his inability to play in the field, ultimately led to his removal from the roster. The Nationals also opted to release pitcher Mitchell Parker, who underwent Tommy John surgery after a difficult 2026 campaign marked by a 6.58 ERA in 22 appearances.
Parker’s journey with the team included a stint as a starter before being shifted to relief this year, following a decline from his rookie season ERA of 4.29 in 2024.
