Former head coach Urban Meyer recently acknowledged a shift in his perspective regarding the influence of NIL and the transfer portal on college football. During an appearance on The Herd, Meyer admitted his previous assumption that these mechanisms would only benefit the wealthiest programs was incorrect, noting that they have instead fostered greater parity across the sport.
He pointed to the competitive similarities between teams like Alabama and UCLA as evidence of this changing landscape.
UCLA's resurgence from a 3-9 record in 2025 to an undefeated status this season has been driven by strategic roster moves under coach Bob Chesney. The team successfully integrated transfers such as Wayne Knight and quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, the latter of whom stepped into the starting role following an injury to Nico Iamaleava.
Iamaleava, who previously departed Tennessee amid contract disputes, has been a key figure in the program's turnaround.
