Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will sit out the rest of the 2026 NFL season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli in his lungs. The condition, confirmed through evaluations in London, stems from an initial superficial blood clot in his left calf that progressed into a more serious blockage.
Despite the severity, Hurts remains clinically stable and is expected to make a full recovery with no long-term effects, though he will require blood-thinning treatment and must avoid all contact activities, including football, during his recovery. The Eagles will turn to rookie quarterback Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick, to lead the team for the remainder of the season.
McKee made his first career start last Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, throwing for 215 yards and a touchdown in a 45-15 loss that left Philadelphia at 2-4 on the season.
Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles released a joint statement confirming the diagnosis and treatment plan, emphasizing that he will remain active with the team while conditioning during his recovery. The clots were not detected until Hurts was in London, where doctors initially advised him to stay awake for roughly 36 hours as a precaution before his game against the Jaguars.
Despite the lack of sleep, Hurts still started and performed well, throwing for 220 yards and a touchdown in that contest.
