Following a chaotic seventh week of college football, ESPN updated its Football Power Index, installing the Ohio State Buckeyes as the top-ranked team. This shift occurred after the previous leaders, the Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, both sustained their first losses of the season.
Despite these setbacks, Georgia and Notre Dame remain highly positioned at third and second, respectively, followed by the Miami Hurricanes and the Indiana Hoosiers. The index, which serves as a predictive model for future performance, indicates that these five programs are the only ones with a greater than 10% probability of securing a national title.
While Ohio State ascended to the top spot, the victory came with a setback as quarterback Julian Sayin sustained an injury during the contest against Indiana. The model remains notably skeptical of several undefeated squads, placing UCLA at 31st and keeping both BYU and Utah outside the top ten.
Within the SEC, Georgia maintains a 46.3% likelihood of winning the conference, significantly ahead of Alabama at 12.4%.
