Title contenders Somerset found themselves in deep trouble at Headingley after slumping to 76 for four, with Ben Cliff claiming his ninth dismissal of the fixture. Tom Lammonby was caught behind off an outside edge by Jonny Bairstow, leaving James Rew to navigate dangerous conditions under the watchful eye of visiting selector Stephen Fleming, who had stopped by the venue the day before.

Cliff nearly removed Rew on the very next delivery with another close play off the edge.

Elsewhere, Middlesex saw their difficult stretch intensify, while action at Grace Road brought a wicket for Hamza Sheikh. Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire were reduced to eight wickets down with a slim 32-run advantage after Brett Hutton was snared in the slips off the bowling of in-form Ari Karvelas.
