New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has openly acknowledged the difficulty of containing India’s explosive top-order batters in the upcoming ODI series, particularly Rohit Sharma. Sharma’s ability to punish short deliveries has forced teams to rethink their approach, with Santner noting that aggressive bowling tactics often backfire against him.
The Indian opener, alongside Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, forms a formidable trio that blends experience, consistency, and aggressive intent, posing a significant challenge for New Zealand’s bowlers. Kohli, in particular, has thrived in New Zealand conditions, amassing 596 runs in 13 ODIs, including a century on his debut in 2014, while Rohit has scored 437 runs in 14 matches, with four half-centuries.
Gill, though less experienced with just 124 runs in five ODIs, has established himself as a reliable opener in recent years. Santner emphasized that the key to success lies in maintaining discipline, building pressure, and adapting to the pitch conditions at Eden Park, where New Zealand recently posted a competitive 259 in a T20I.
The late-evening start of the match could also introduce dew as an additional factor, complicating the bowling challenge further.
