Virat Kohli delivered an unbeaten 139 from 88 deliveries to power India to a comfortable eight-wicket victory against the West Indies in Kerala on Sunday. Captain Shubman Gill also recorded a century as the home side successfully chased down a target of 296 with 50 balls remaining.
The pair forged a crucial 151-run partnership for the second wicket to completely remove the opposition from contention. Following the match, Gill offered strong backing for his veteran teammate, emphasizing that a player with such a proven track record should be granted the freedom to play naturally without constant pressure.
During the fixture, Kohli achieved a major milestone by becoming only the second batter in history to reach 15,000 runs in one-day internationals, joining Sachin Tendulkar. Addressing his teammate's recent form and past scrutiny, Gill noted that the experienced batsman is currently playing with renewed enjoyment and freedom.
Kohli has expressed his intention to continue representing the national squad through the 2027 World Cup.
