India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill will make his return to the Ranji Trophy, joining Punjab for their second-round fixture against Chhattisgarh starting October 18. Gill missed the team’s opening match against Assam in New Chandigarh, where former India U-19 leader Uday Saharan led the side in his absence.
The decision comes after Gill’s standout performances in the recent ODI series against the West Indies, where he became the first player to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award five times, matching the record set by West Indies captain Hayley Matthews. His series-high 223 off 133 balls in the second ODI—including the fastest double-century in ODI history—helped India chase down a target of 406 with ease, further cementing his reputation as one of the format’s most explosive batsmen.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has confirmed that the ODI squad for India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand will be finalized within the next two to three days, following the announcement of the T20I team for the same series.
