The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has taken a major step toward streamlining athlete compensation by adopting standardized Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) contracts across its member schools. Following the Big Ten’s lead, SEC presidents approved a uniform agreement model on Monday, allowing institutions to distribute up to $21.6 million in direct revenue shares to players this academic year.
This move comes as part of the 10-year revenue-sharing window established by the House v. NCAA settlement, which saw athletes collectively earn nearly $1.8 billion in direct payments during the 2025-26 school year, according to the College Sports Commission.
The SEC’s new framework includes customizable sections, though specific details remain undisclosed, while the Big Ten’s earlier template allowed schools to adjust terms as needed. Notably, some Big Ten programs faced scrutiny over alleged NIL cap evasion, with public records revealing variations in contract terms, such as Washington’s inclusion of a liquidated damages clause for players entering the transfer portal.
