The Seattle Mariners are quietly scouting the Arizona Fall League (AFL) for potential coaching candidates, looking beyond their own organization for fresh perspectives. Currently, the Mariners are represented in the league by Jordan Cowan, serving as hitting coach for the Peoria Javelinas, and Dylan Gargas in the pitching coach role.
While the league is typically known for showcasing top prospects, this year’s focus is on the coaches sent by MLB teams to refine their skills and gain experience with diverse talent pools. Several former AFL managers, including Kevin Cash, AJ Hinch, Torey Lovullo, Derek Shelton, and Warren Schaeffer, have since moved into major-league managerial roles, suggesting the league as a potential pipeline for future coaching talent.
Among the names gaining attention is Billy Facteau, a 24-year-old development coach for the Norfolk Tides (Orioles’ Triple-A team), who previously worked as a tech coordinator intern with the Orioles. His background in data translation and outfield coaching—an area the Mariners may need to strengthen—could make him an intriguing candidate for a larger role, though securing him would likely require a significant offer.
Another standout is Jeff Livesey, the 60-year-old hitting coach for the Surprise Saguaros, whose experience could align with the Mariners’ search for veteran leadership in their coaching ranks.
