Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Bryan Thomas Jr.
were ejected after the opening kickoff of Sunday morning's game in London. The disqualifications occurred before an official play had been run, taking both defensive contributors out of the contest immediately.
Jacksonville went on to secure a 19-17 victory over Philadelphia.
The sequence began on the initial play when Jacksonville's Josh Cameron ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. However, the score was called back by a holding penalty.
As game officials started to call everyone back to re-do the kickoff, chaos unfolded in the middle of the field. Trotter and Thomas fought amid the stoppage, prompting the referee and his crew to disqualify both participants.
Following the 19-17 Jacksonville win, referee Ron Torbert explained the decision with pool reporter Mark Long of the Associated Press. Torbert clarified why the crew decided to disqualify the two athletes, noting that it stemmed from sustained activity outside the scope of the game.
“They were disqualified for continuous non-football actions after the play was over,” Torbert stated. The referee also stated that he saw no punches thrown during the skirmish, indicating that the decision was simply a result of both players engaging in “continuous and non-football actions.”
The officiating crew made the decision on their own, which was subsequently confirmed by the league office. The situation will be reviewed for further discipline by the NFL.
Philadelphia linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr.'s ejection from Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London came 21 years after his father was also tossed from an NFL game.
