Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald affirmed his confidence in starting quarterback Sam Darnold following a 17-14 overtime defeat to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Macdonald stated that the team maintains strong faith in Darnold, viewing him as a key component of the offensive strategy rather than the source of the problems, despite the unit's increased turnover rate.
Darnold's performance has declined significantly this season, as he has thrown an NFL-leading seven interceptions against seven touchdowns in five games, causing his passer rating to fall from 99.1 to 77.4. The Seahawks' overall offensive output has also dropped to 5.3 yards per play, a middle-of-the-pack figure compared to the top-five ranking of 5.8 yards per play from the previous year.
Complicating the situation is the strong showing by backup Drew Lock, who has thrown four touchdowns without an interception and completed over 70 percent of his passes in two appearances, including a 31-7 victory over the Cardinals. Seattle aims to return to a winning record when they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football next week.
