Australia will give veteran batsman Steve Smith as much time as possible to prove his fitness before the series‑deciding third Test in Cape Town, captain Pat Cummins said on Monday. Smith suffered a neck injury during South Africa’s innings in the second Test at Gqeberha, which the hosts won by 31 runs to level the series at 1‑1.
Cummins expressed hope that Smith will be cleared to play, noting the team will wait for the final piece of the puzzle before naming a side. He also indicated that Cameron Green is likely to bat in the middle order, with Matt Renshaw expected to open alongside Travis Head after Nic Maddinson was dropped from the squad.
