Faf du Plessis, who played nine seasons for Chennai Super Kings before moving to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2022, praised MS Dhoni's instinctive leadership style. During a podcast appearance with Prakhar Gupta, the former South African captain noted that Dhoni's ability to stay calm and read the game in real-time, rather than relying on pre-set plans, was a key strength he hopes to integrate into his own captaincy.

Du Plessis accumulated 4,773 runs and three titles with the Chennai franchise.

MS Dhoni, who will be 46 next year, remains uncertain about his future in the IPL. After missing the 2026 season due to injuries, he stated that his participation in the next season depends on his physical health, with a final decision expected by December.

Since Dhoni stepped down as captain in 2024 and handed the role to Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK has finished fifth, tenth, and eighth in the points table, failing to reach the playoffs.
