Longtime New York Rangers star Ron Duguay died Thursday at age 69 after battling cancer, the franchise announced after being notified by his family. The Rangers described him as one of the most popular players in team history, noting his flowing hair, skill, tenacity and charisma that endeared him to fans at Madison Square Garden.
Duguay was drafted 13th overall by the Rangers in 1977, helped the club reach the 1979 Stanley Cup Final and earned an All‑Star appearance in 1982. After a trade to Detroit in 1983 he posted career‑high 89 points in 1984‑85, later playing for Pittsburgh, a second Rangers stint and finishing his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings in 1988‑89.
He retired with 673 points (305 goals, 368 assists), spent time in the IHL with the San Diego Gulls, and served 12 years as an MSG Network analyst.
