The Kansas City Chiefs enter Week 6 with an undefeated record and one of the NFL’s most potent offenses, ranking fifth in scoring (29.5 points per game) and second in total yards (412). Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been the engine behind their success, throwing nine touchdowns and just two interceptions in four games while averaging 8.1 yards per pass attempt.
However, he’s identified key areas for improvement, particularly in ball security and consistency. Mahomes acknowledged holding onto the ball too long in the Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, where he took eight quarterback hits despite the Chiefs’ offensive line dealing with significant changes, including rookie left tackle Kahlil Benson and veteran backup Mike Caliendo stepping in at left guard.
His average time to throw in that game (3.04 seconds) was the slowest of the season, a departure from his usual efficiency (2.7 seconds, sixth-fastest in the NFL).
With star receiver Tyquan Thornton sidelined for the season due to a serious ankle injury, Mahomes emphasized the need for greater consistency throughout games. He highlighted the importance of maintaining explosive plays while also minimizing turnovers and three-and-out situations, suggesting the Chiefs’ offense could elevate further by relying more on running back Kenneth Walker, who leads the NFL in rushing yards (537) after the bye.
Mahomes’ self-critical approach—focusing on quicker releases and deeper shot accuracy—could be pivotal as the Chiefs aim to sustain their momentum against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6.
