Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs recently addressed a touchdown celebration that sparked online backlash due to its perceived resemblance to handcuff gestures. Following a short scoring run in a 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers, Jacobs briefly placed his hands behind his back while accepting congratulations from teammates.
Critics on social media interpreted the gesture as a reference to his recent legal troubles and subsequent placement on the commissioner's exempt list. However, Jacobs clarified that the movement was actually a tribute to a gospel song titled Break Every Chain, which he and receiver Savion Williams had planned ahead of time.
This outing marked just the second appearance of the season for the running back, who missed significant time following a May altercation with his then-girlfriend. Although he recently entered a no-contest plea to misdemeanor counts of battery and criminal damage to property, the National Football League's internal inquiry remains active.
Jacobs expressed frustration that television broadcasts cut away before the full sequence of the choreography could be shown. Despite the public scrutiny, he remains eligible to take the field while league officials continue their review.
