Goalkeeper Jesus Owono has withdrawn from the Equatorial Guinea national team for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. This decision follows the tragic passing of Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel, who died after a collision with Owono during a recent Spanish second-tier fixture.
Owono, who has served as his country's primary goalkeeper since 2020, expressed deep personal distress regarding the incident. The Equatorial Guinea football federation confirmed they are supporting the player during this difficult time.
The team is scheduled to play a two-leg series against Zimbabwe, starting with a home fixture on November 12, followed by an away game in Harare. Currently, Equatorial Guinea and Zimbabwe are tied at three points each in Group E, trailing leaders DR Congo.
