North Carolina State is reportedly weighing two former Wolfpack quarterbacks for its vacant head coaching position: Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson. Both players left Raleigh with standout college careers before becoming NFL stars in the 2010s.
Wilson, who spent his first three seasons at NC State, led the ACC in passing yards (3,563) and touchdowns (28) as a junior, guiding the Wolfpack to a 9-4 record. After transferring to Wisconsin, he was drafted in the third round by the Seahawks in 2012, where he won Super Bowl XLVIII in his second season before moving on to the Broncos, Steelers, and Giants.
Wilson retired last year and has no coaching experience, while Rivers currently coaches his son at a high school in Alabama. The Wolfpack fired longtime head coach Dave Doeren last week after 14 seasons, with interim coach Todd Goebbel leading them to a 31-10 win over Cal on Saturday.
The search now pits two former stars against each other for the chance to return to Raleigh and rebuild the program.
