On October 16, 1971, the undefeated Notre Dame football squad hosted North Carolina at Notre Dame Stadium in front of 59,075 spectators. With Joe Theismann gone, sophomore Cliff Brown stepped in for his first start of the season at quarterback.
Although the Irish offense struggled to reach the end zone, kicker Bob Thomas provided all the necessary points by converting field goals of 28, 27, and 24 yards, matching a school record originally established by Gus Dorais against Texas in 1913. Supported by these kicks, Ara Parseghian's dominant defense continued its remarkable shutout streak, holding the Tar Heels scoreless to preserve a 9-0 victory.
Clarence Ellis also contributed to the stellar defensive effort, while Lewis Jolley managed kickoff returns for North Carolina.
