The NFL Referees Association has announced plans to contest the league’s recent suspensions of two officials following incidents during Week 4 games, calling the penalties disproportionate. Referee Adrian Hill and line judge Jeff Seeman were both disciplined for unprofessional conduct—Hill for a one-game ban and Seeman for a two-game suspension, the longest for an official since 1988.
The union argues the punishments exceed historical precedent, particularly since prior altercations with players resulted in shorter suspensions. Seeman’s suspension stems from a heated exchange with Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, who had appealed for a missed penalty call, while Hill’s stems from an incident involving Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson after a collision with Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II.
The NFL Players Association has also weighed in, urging officials to be held to the same standards as players in maintaining professionalism on the field.
