Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson has announced his retirement from the NFL, ending a 14-year career with the franchise after being listed as inactive for Week 4 due to personal reasons. The six-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl champion cited mental health as the primary factor in his decision, noting that he had previously discussed struggles with anxiety dating back to his college days.
Johnson’s absence in the team’s Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams marked the latest in a series of off-field challenges, including missed training camp practices earlier this year and a season-ending injury in 2025 that raised questions about his future. Despite signing a contract extension in May 2025 that would have kept him with the Eagles through 2027, Johnson made the choice to step away after just three games into the 2026 season, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most dominant right tackles in NFL history.
His on-field impact was significant, with the Eagles’ offense performing markedly better when he was active, averaging a top-three efficiency rating with him on the field compared to a near-bottom mark without him.
