The NFC South’s Week 5 results left the division’s title race as unclear as ever, with only the Carolina Panthers on a bye week emerging unscathed. Tampa Bay’s 24–16 primetime upset over the Dallas Cowboys marked the Buccaneers’ first win of the season, thanks in large part to UDFA Jalon Daniels, who delivered a clutch conversion on a critical third-down play.
Despite the Cowboys’ costly mental errors and turnovers, the victory kept Tampa Bay’s playoff hopes alive—though their 1-4 record still leaves them far from contention. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints suffered their fifth straight loss, falling 13–23 to the Minnesota Vikings in a game where quarterback Tyler Shough struggled mightily, throwing two interceptions and failing to reach 100 passing yards.
The Saints’ defense managed to spark a late offensive surge from Minnesota, but the team’s offensive struggles and defensive inconsistencies continue to derail their season under Kellen Moore’s leadership. Atlanta’s hopes also took a hit as the Falcons lost a heartbreaker to the Ravens in overtime, dropping them to 2-3 and further muddying the division’s standings.
The Panthers, now alone atop the NFC South at 2-2, will look to build on their bye-week advantage when they face a struggling Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6, while the Buccaneers host a Steelers team missing key starters in their next matchup.
