Mitchell Santner acknowledges Kohli-Rohit threat, says New Zealand must find a way to stop India's top order

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has openly acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by India’s batting lineup ahead of the upcoming ODI series, with particular focus on the returning stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The duo’s recent performances against the West Indies have underscored their continued dominance, with Rohit amassing 225 runs across three innings—including a century and a half-century—while Kohli scored 168, headlined by an explosive 139 off just 88 balls in the opening match.

Santner noted that their ability to anchor the innings and accelerate at will, combined with Shubman Gill’s strong form, will demand disciplined bowling from New Zealand to disrupt India’s top-order rhythm early in each game. The series opener at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval on Wednesday is expected to draw large crowds, with Santner acknowledging the electric atmosphere that accompanies the presence of India’s batting heavyweights.

Despite their age—Kohli (37) and Rohit (39)—both players have shown no signs of slowing down, with Santner admitting their consistency remains a key factor in India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
