McBurnie & seven uncapped players in Pocognoli's first Scotland squad

Newly appointed Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli has made bold choices in his opening roster, awarding first-time senior honors to seven footballers and recalling forward Oli McBurnie after a five-year hiatus. Luis Binks, Colby Donovan, Jon McCracken, Josh McPake, Stephen Welsh, Luke Graham, and Robbie Ure are the fresh faces entering the fold for four upcoming Nations League B fixtures.

The 30-year-old McBurnie, who owns 16 international appearances without a goal in open play, had been overlooked since 2021 by preceding boss Steve Clarke despite previously converting a vital shootout attempt to help secure Euro 2020 qualification. Additional returns include Scott Bain, Kieron Bowie, Josh Doig, Lennon Miller, James Wilson, and Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour, the latter having recovered from the fitness setback that ruled him out of the World Cup.

The Belgian tactician highlighted that the grouping provides an ideal balance of leadership, youthful talent, and tactical alignment for his desired on-field approach. Among the newcomers, 25-year-old Brondby defender Binks earned his breakthrough following previous youth stints with England and Scotland, while 20-year-old Celtic fullback Donovan made an impression stepping in for Alistair Johnston.

Pocognoli commences his tenure away against Slovenia on 26 September before marking his Hampden Park arrival versus Switzerland three days later. Scotland will round out the international window with a journey to North Macedonia on 3 October and a rematch hosting Slovenia on 6 October.
