Left in the dark - will fans ever get to hear live VAR audio?

Match-going spectators continue to experience confusion during video reviews, highlighted recently when 74,161 attendees at Old Trafford watched Michael Oliver confirm Erling Haaland's decisive strike in Manchester City's 1-0 victory, unaware that an offside check centered on Enzo Fernandez. Similarly, during Crystal Palace's 3-2 defeat against Ipswich Town, Chelsea loanee Axel Disasi waited pitchside for over sixty seconds following his dismissal for serious foul play while attendees at Selhurst Park were left uninformed.

Although television broadcasters have direct access to video assistant referee communications to guide home audiences, stadium attendees remain isolated from the dialogue nearly a decade after technology's introduction.

Howard Webb pledged increased openness upon becoming England's refereeing leader in 2022, introducing Match Officials Mic'd Up after previously pioneering the post-game show Inside VAR with Major League Soccer in 2019 and testing live audio transmissions during the MLS is Back Tournament in August 2020. However, efforts to broadcast live exchanges remain blocked by FIFA and the International Football Association Board, whose chief executive Lukas Brud previously warned that live feeds would cause pandemonium due to simultaneous speakers.

Lawmakers express ongoing resistance because of subjective judgment calls, worries over worldwide communication standards, increased strain placed on match officials, and potential threats to refereeing credibility.
