World No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s season has ended abruptly after a persistent knee injury forced his withdrawal from five consecutive tournaments, including the US Open and Shanghai Masters.
The Italian star, who had just defended his Wimbledon title in July, will now miss at least 18 months of competition, dropping him from the top of the ATP rankings as a result. His early exit follows a dominant start to the season, where he won five straight Masters 1000 titles and finished with a 44-3 record before his injury derailed his momentum.
Meanwhile, his primary rival, Carlos Alcaraz, returned to action in late August after a four-month absence due to a wrist injury sustained in April, adding to a wave of setbacks among top young players. French rising star Arthur Fils, currently ranked 11th, echoed concerns about the grueling demands of the modern tour, noting that younger stars like Sinner, Alcaraz, and even himself are facing an unusually high number of injuries amid relentless travel and competition schedules.
