Kentucky’s historic 35–34 overtime victory over No. 10 LSU on Saturday cemented their place in the College Football Playoff conversation, as the Wildcats secured their fifth win of the season and vaulted into the national rankings.
The win marked the first time in FBS history a team has won consecutive one-point overtime games, with Will Stein’s squad capitalizing on a dramatic two-point conversion after a field storm by fans—prompting a $500,000 SEC fine. Kentucky’s defense stifled LSU’s ground game, holding them to just 94 rushing yards, while Brock Coffman’s 55-yard punt-return touchdown and a clutch 33-yard field goal by Adam Zouagui in regulation sealed the comeback.
The Cats now sit at 5–1 (3–1 SEC), with two top-10 wins and a resume strong enough to rank among the latest playoff projections from CBS, ESPN, and On3—though ESPN’s Heather Dinich notes they’d need to surpass the Group of 5 champion to lock in a spot. Stein, who entered the season with preseason win expectations around 4.5, has already exceeded them, leading Kentucky to a record start unseen since 1913.
