J.J. McCarthy trade grades for Giants, Vikings after QB goes to New York for draft pick

The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for an unconditional fifth-round choice in the 2027 NFL Draft.

This transaction follows a season-ending knee injury suffered by starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, which left the Giants seeking offensive reinforcement alongside contributions from Jameis Winston and Carson Wentz. McCarthy previously fell behind Kyler Murray and Wentz during summer training camp battles in Minnesota.

For the Minnesota Vikings, the deal resolves lingering questions regarding their young signal-caller and clears up potential quarterback controversy while the team holds a 3-0 record under head coach Brian Flores and starting quarterback Murray. Meanwhile, New York hopes offensive coordinator Matt Nagy can leverage his past experience with quarterback development to integrate McCarthy effectively following injuries to both Dart and defensive standout Brian Burns.
