Inside the failed Commanders 2-point conversion that doomed Washington vs. Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles edged the Washington Commanders 24-22 in their 2026 Week 1 opener on Sunday, surviving a dramatic fourth-quarter push by the visitors. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts totaled 203 passing yards and delivered three touchdowns, while Washington rallied behind Jayden Daniels, who threw two fourth-quarter scores and produced an elusive scramble that helped spark the late comeback.

Washington had an opportunity to pull even with 1:01 left on the clock, but Philadelphia defender Moro Ojomo stopped the Commanders' tying two-point conversion attempt.

Earlier in the contest, another critical conversion chance slipped away after Stefon Diggs caught his first touchdown for Washington. Diggs was assessed a costly 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for embracing the goalpost in celebration, compelling the Commanders to kick a standard extra point to make the score 17-16 rather than trying for two points.

Both Daniels and Washington head coach Dan Quinn reviewed the tough road defeat afterward, noting how close play-calling and disciplined execution came to swinging the outcome.
