Inside Liverpool's increasing global investment in youth

September 29, 2026

Liverpool are ramping up their worldwide recruitment efforts to rebuild a talent pipeline that has generated more than £230m from junior departures since 2020. Under the guidance of Matt Newberry and sporting director Julian Ward, the club is targeting overseas prospects following post-Brexit restrictions that prevent clubs from acquiring European players under the age of 18.

Academy director Alex Inglethorpe notes that the overarching aim remains integration into the senior squad for every intake. As part of this expanded international approach, the Merseyside outfit secured 18-year-old defender Mor Talla Ndiaye from Senegal earlier this year for approximately £1m plus add-ons.

Ndiaye has already experienced the senior environment, featuring in pre-season under Andoni Iraola, making matchday squads for Arne Slot, and drawing praise from under-21 manager Rob Page.
