Hutton half-century helps Notts recover at Sussex

Title-seeking Nottinghamshire encountered severe resistance on the opening day at Hove, recovering to 232 for nine thanks to a resilient ninth-wicket alliance between Brett Hutton and Tom Giles. After visiting captain Haseeb Hameed dropped his sixth coin toss in a row, the defending champions found themselves sent in under floodlights and sustained overhead cloud cover that aided swing throughout.

Sussex's probing seam unit steadily dismantled the top order, beginning when Tom Price—making his return from injury after missing action since mid-June—had Hameed caught at slip. Left-armer Sean Hunt removed Ben Slater for 21 shortly after the opener crossed 10,000 career first-class runs, before Jaydev Unadkat claimed Freddie McCann to notch his 500th first-class scalp.

Following a rain interruption that eliminated 13 overs after lunch, Unadkat had Jack Haynes caught at second slip, and Ari Karvelas dismissed division-topping batsman Joe Clarke for 36 right as Clarke surpassed 1,300 runs on the campaign.

The visitors seemed in dire straits at the bottom of the order, but Hutton steadied the innings with an unbeaten 59 across more than two and a half hours, bringing up his fifty in 112 deliveries. Alongside Giles, who struck 32 before Price bowled him with an incoming delivery late in the evening, Hutton put on a crucial 74-run stand.
