Florida’s hopes for a turnaround against No. 7 Texas took a hit after quarterback Aaron Philo’s availability for Saturday’s showdown was thrown into doubt.
The Gators, currently 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play, had already lost their last two conference games—including a setback to South Carolina—and now face a critical injury setback just as they aim to climb back into College Football Playoff contention under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. Philo, who has thrown for 1,341 yards and nine touchdowns this season, could miss the game, while star wide receiver Vernell Brown III practiced Wednesday and showed strong progress in his recovery from a knee injury.
Brown, who has 17 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns in four games, has a realistic chance to return for the Texas matchup, where Florida needs every playmaker if they’re to overcome a tough stretch of three ranked opponents in their next four games.
