DP World Tour ruling puts LIV players’ Ryder Cup hopes at risk

October 15, 2026

The DP World Tour has introduced a new membership policy that threatens to complicate Ryder Cup aspirations for golfers affiliated with LIV Golf, effective from 2027. Under the updated rules, players planning to compete in LIV events will no longer be eligible for DP World Tour membership, directly impacting their ability to qualify for Europe’s team event.

This shift comes as LIV Golf faces financial instability, including recent bankruptcy proceedings and the withdrawal of Saudi Arabia’s financial backing, which has led some players to reconsider their commitments. The policy change also follows years of tension over conflicting schedules and disciplinary issues between the two tours, making it harder for players to balance competing obligations while maintaining their eligibility for prestigious team competitions like the Ryder Cup.

Europe’s qualification process, already underway, will now require players to meet stricter membership criteria to earn points through designated DP World Tour and PGA Tour events by August 22, 2027. The ruling adds pressure on Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, who must select players based on both eligibility and performance, with only six automatic spots available through the points list and six additional picks at his discretion.

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton previously navigated similar disputes but now face an even more challenging landscape under the new policy.
