Rutter scores twice as Brighton win big in Conference League
October 15, 2026
Brighton and Hove Albion kicked off their Europa Conference League campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over Lithuanian Cup winners Kauno Žalgiris, thanks to a dominant performance at home. Georginio Rutter was the standout figure, scoring twice and providing an assist in the first half, including a VAR-awarded goal after an initial offside call was overturned.
The Dutch forward’s second strike came after a swift counterattack involving Malick Yalcouye and Ibrahim Osman, while Jack Hinshelwood—returning from injury—added a clinical finish to double Brighton’s lead before halftime. Matt O’Riley then rounded off the scoring with a header, though his late effort for a second goal was denied by a crucial save from Kauno Žalgiris’ goalkeeper, Tomas Svedkauskas.
The win marks Brighton’s fifth consecutive victory across all competitions under Fabian Hurzeler, setting a strong tone ahead of their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace this weekend.
