After decades of uncertainty, the future of Austin’s beloved Lions Municipal Golf Course—affectionately known as Muny—now appears secure following a landmark agreement between the city and the University of Texas. The deal, years in the making, will transfer ownership of the historic 18-hole course from UT to the city, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
The breakthrough resolves years of temporary leases and negotiations, with the latest extension set to expire in May 2027. The effort was spearheaded by the Muny Conservancy, co-chaired by golf legend Ben Crenshaw and longtime collaborator Scotty Sayers, who have championed the cause since 2019.
The agreement hinges on anonymous donors funding educational initiatives at UT in exchange for the land donation, while the city will retain the course’s 140 acres. Additionally, the West Austin Youth Association will gain control of its 13-acre property adjacent to Muny, further solidifying the course’s community ties.
Crenshaw, who grew up playing the course, has called Muny a cornerstone of Austin’s identity, emphasizing its role as a unifying space for over a century.
