Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee will take his biggest NFL opportunity yet in Week 6, starting in place of injured starter Jalen Hurts. Hurts is out with a superficial blood clot that developed after the team’s Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and worsened during last week’s London game, forcing him to miss Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
The Eagles, looking to snap a three-game losing streak and stay in the NFC East race, will rely on McKee, who has made just two career starts but served as Hurts’ primary backup last season and appeared in six games total over the past two years. Though a third option in rookie Cole Payton exists, McKee is expected to lead the offense when the Eagles return to Lincoln Financial Field this weekend under intense scrutiny.
McKee’s path to the NFL began as a standout high school prospect, earning four-star status and ranking as high as No. 38 overall in the 2018 recruiting class.
A three-sport athlete at Corona Centennial High School in California, he was one of the top quarterbacks in his class, ultimately committing to Stanford, where he developed into a reliable backup before entering the league.
