Colorado head coach Deion Sanders opened his pregame press conference with a rare moment of reflection, paying tribute to Oklahoma State’s legendary former coach Mike Gundy. Gundy, who spent 21 seasons leading the Cowboys and remains the program’s winningest coach, earned Sanders’ admiration for his long-standing impact on the program, including a Big 12 championship in 2011 and multiple bowl appearances.
Sanders even extended a personal invitation to Gundy, jokingly offering to join him for a fishing trip while emphasizing Gundy’s enduring legacy. 'He’s unbelievable—the run he had, the man he is,' Sanders said, underscoring Gundy’s influence even as Oklahoma State enters a new era under first-year head coach Eric Morris.
Sanders also praised Morris’ early work in Stillwater, highlighting the quarterback play of Drew Mestemaker, who has thrown for at least 300 yards in five consecutive games. Morris, who took over from Gundy last season, reshaped the Cowboys’ roster by bringing in players aligned with his vision, a strategy Sanders called 'exactly what he wanted.' The Colorado coach acknowledged the challenge of following a coach of Gundy’s caliber but noted Morris’ ability to establish a fresh identity for the program, even amid the transition.
