Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham is reportedly planning to hand the starting quarterback role to freshman Tommy Carr for Saturday's contest against No. 6 Indiana, following a decisive performance by the newcomer in the previous week's 21-18 win over Penn State.
Carr entered that game at halftime to replace Bryce Underwood, who had completed five of 11 passes for 43 yards and two interceptions, and proceeded to throw for 47 yards on five of seven attempts while adding a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to secure the team's first Big Ten victory of the season.
The switch, first detailed by CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, leaves Underwood, who began the year as the established starter, in a position of uncertainty as the Wolverines prepare for a difficult test against the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers have dropped just one game since the start of the 2025 season, a loss to Ohio State last week, and will face Carr in what would be his first collegiate start at Michigan Stadium at noon on Saturday.
Carr's candidacy is further bolstered by his lineage, as he is the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, who guided the program to the 1997 national title.
